They

How many of us have read "They", a short story by RAH?

As far as I know, it was only ever published in an obscure little anthology which didn't even have the authors' names on the cover, just a table of contents and a handful of sci fi shorts. I ran across it entirely by accident...

...and fell in love. It is my most favorite short story ever.

If very many of us have not read it, and would like to, I will post the whole thing. It was only about 2 dozen paperback pages.

Big hugs

Please do as I am unsure I have read it. There are more than a few of RAH's stories that have appeared under various different titles in anthologies and then alone in magazines, or as part of his own collected works, all under different titles (and sometimes edited into different versions).

One option you might consider is that if you don't want to post the whole document here you could offer it as a P2P for those that PM you and then email it to them as an attachment.

    Thank you in advance.

And due to many titles having gotten changed at various points, perhaps a blurb-- you know, like saying "Life-line is about a Dr. who invents a machine that can predict the exact length of someone's life." See, gets the idea there, but doesn't give anything away, not really.

But I don't think I've read it either, which means nothing, because i can't even remember the Doc's name in "Life-line!"

      Um, two points...

First, the story "They" which originally appeared in Unknown magazine in 1941 has been reprinted in a collection called 6 X H, said collection subsequently reissued as The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag, and more recently in a larger collection called The Fantasies of Robert A. Heinlein. "They" is of course well worth reading, one of his best short stories. The events of the story are also alluded to in his novel Job.

Second, please don't say or do anything which encourages the illegal copying of an author's work when it is available in print, as noted above. An honest publisher has kept this story in print along with many others, and if you wish to see the author's work remain in print you'll appreciate that encouraging sales of the book is a good thing.

In her last years, Ginny Heinlein was very dilligent about seeking out and stopping illicit downloadable versions of her husband's work, so please know this is something of which the Heinleins would not approve. No offense meant, and I know your intentions are good!

Good point Laz. If memory serves me right "They" was a pecursor to , or at least made references to "Job." I believe I read it in Analog or some such 25 cent magazine back in the 50's. Unfortunately as we grow older, so do our memories, so don't quote me. :-)

Whoops, I should have read Richard's post before I posted. Very Good pootints Risch, and thanks for clearing up the fog in the old brain cells.

First of all, I 100% agree, if it's still in print, let people buy it. I'm sure RAH's royalties go to a good cause (as he had no offspring).

Secondly, I have both 6xH and J. Hoag--which story was "They?"

I have only ever seen the story in one anthology of shorts by various authors, and do not remember seeing it in the others Richard mentioned.

"which story was They" - The only title the story was ever published under was "They", and if it is in print now, I would dearly love to know where. (???) The only reason I offered to type the whole thing out and post it was because it appears to be impossible to buy a copy.

          Anyone know who to ask?

          :-)

Contact Putnam & Sons Publishing in New York. They will put you in touch with the Heinlien Trustee Estate, from whom you would have to obtain permission to copyright the material. Which they may do for something that old, and if it is for enjoyment of others only on a public board.

"They" is the story in which a man believes that everything in the world is an elaborately constructed deception solely created to keep him from realizing the truth about reality.

According to Robert A. Heinlein: A Reader's Companion by James Gifford, RAH wrote this story during a trip to New York City. As a New Yorker, I decline to say whether or not my hometown usually makes people feel that way... ;-)

It's available in a collection called The Fantasies of Robert A. Heinlein:

See, I moved to NYC in 2000. I haven't really unpacked my Heinlein box since then. So I had forgotten. But I vaguely remember "They" now.

And, yes, New York does kinda do that to you (although, not as much as California, I have come to believe).

Richard: "'They' is the story in which a man believes that everything in the world is an elaborately constructed deception solely created to keep him from realizing the truth about reality."

What you forgot to mention is that, in the end, we the readers learn that his suspicion was correct.

I have met many an Alice...

Thanks for the link, I would love to get more (newer) copies of anything with this story included - mine is ancient and falling apart.

              LMAO - Grandma
