ALL of them...

This tribe is founded on the love of Robert Heinlein and his novels
[period]

Known as the 'Dean of Space Age Fiction', Heinlein was judged (more than once) as the author of "Best Novel of the Year" by the World Science Fiction convention circa the late 60s and early 70s.

RAH is without close rival the most popular author in the history of science fiction.

That being said... I encourage and support references, reviews and relationships to ALL of RAH's books and anything that even remotely connects us to who Heinlein was (as an author AND human being) and also what he accomplished with his writing.

In other words, telling us about reading or loving some *other* RAH story is GOOD!

I'm mentioning this because I want to clear the way towards the big picture of what RAH was all about.

- RAH wrote many great stories (some juveniles, some not)
including Podkayne of Mars, Between Planets, The Red Planet and others that are related to his speculative vision of the flora/fauna of Mars (in the universes that are portrayed in his stories, as adverse to other hugely popular versions including Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom series, and others that I'll list in a later post).

More about that later...

however, the intention of this thread is to jump-start some dialog about his whole body of work.

Heinlein created a future of vast scope and stunning insights, which he began to tell us about in "Methuselah's Children" and continued with the masterful novel "Time Enough For Love" (which without a doubt is a major favorite for many of us)...

At this time I'd like to mention that there are members of this tribe who are involved in another tribe relating to this...

TO MEMBERS OF THE LONG FAMILY TRIBE:
Give us a shout, we'd like to hear from you!

If you have red hair, or if you relate to people who have red hair, or if you LOVE people who have red hair, then you'll have some things to comment on...

*and a honorary mention goes out to the character of Lazarus Long and to our fellow-tribe member who has assumed that Nom de Plume, Lazarus...who gives us many interesting, exciting futuristic concepts to advance our exploration of the nature of humans...and who will be around forever if intelligence and pro-survival traits are any indicators...it is a good thing to be a 'virtual' member of the Howard Family.

To continue this thread I propose creating a list of Heinlein's red-headed characters as a way of honoring something that RAH was obviously intentional about...or if you prefer, let us all know who YOU identify with the most, or who you would like to meet...if you could slip into one of the stories and rub elbows with the characters.

Waiting Is.

Peace and Out for now.

(who Groks that being red-headed can be an internal thing too! )

I was a carrot top growing up. But i also grew up with a very prominate scar under my left eye, so...my introduction to RAH was with Glory Road, and being a soilder myself i must admit to an affinity for Oscar. I have yet to hear peoples thoughts on this story. I geuss my heroic trinity ala RAH would be Lazarus, Jonny Rico from Starship and Oscar from Glory road, and my Budha , of course, would be Mike 8 )

I actually heard a rumor that Glory Road was being made into a feature film. Anyone else heard something similar?

What I'd really like to see though, is a TV series based on Heilein's Future History - that would be so awesome.

Yes, but who would you nominate to direct and/or produce that would do it justice? I hear Lucas is a bit tied up at the moment...

Speilburg? Jackson? I think either would do a credible job.

Ummm... The Widow Heinlein has been dead for quite some time, & didn;t really have any say in the matter anyway, because...

_Stranger_ has been under option (the film rights have been sold & resold in Hollywood, in a never-ending chain) damned near since the book came out. I used to know a guy who had held the rights for a while (a college freind's dad, who owns the Gower Street studios in L.A.); he tried, but (despite being an Emmy-winning TV producer) he could not get the money or a distributor, & eventually had to sell the rights before his option ran out.

For a while Tom Hanks owned the rights (he wanted to play Ben Caxton). But even with HIS star power, he *could not* get it made. It cannot get made (at least so far - I'd love someone to do a good job of proving me wrong!), basically because there's no studio or distributor who'd allow it to be released with anything vaguely resembling its most important themes even hinted at, mush less intact.

Basically, the problem is that Hollywood has NO guts when it comes to REALLY challenging people's most deeply held preconcieved prejudices.

Tell people that monogamy *itself*, and not the violation of it, is one of the main problems people have in relationships? That jealousy & posessivenss, NOT the desire to love more than one person, are 2 of the main reaons people are so unhappy? HAH!

Never mind having the balls to be seen distributing a film that basically says most maintream religion is bullshit, that "thou shalt nots" are mostly bullshit, & that televangelistic fundamentalism in particular is a cynical scam designed to fleece idiots of their money & grab political power, whose leaders don't give a flying fuck in a windstorm about god. The Fundies would most likely *literally* _lynch_ anyone involved with making such a film, let alone releasing it.

That's why. Since you asked, & all.

I whole-heartedly agree with Keith. Hollywood couldn't produce any of Heinlein's works without horribly mangling them. Anyone see The Puppet Masters with Donald Sutherland. What would need to happen is an Indie film group with vision and guts would have to do the project, and even then they would have problems getting a distributor.

Something along the line of how "What the Bleep" was made as an independent project with atypical distribution and word-of-mouth buzz???

                    THAT would be the ticket!

Amen, Keith. My thoughts exactly, even back when I first read it (and more so all the time). I remember being surprised (and utterly delighted) that it even made it into print.
